Both of his children, Kelly and Chris, graduated from Gull Lake High school, and now his grandsons are students at Gull Lake schools. An athletics enthusiast, Mr. Quartermaine was a common sight in the community and at Gull Lake sporting events, supporting the athletics program through the Sports Boosters and cheering on the Gull Lake teams. In August of 2010, Mr. Quartermaine passed away, and his family wanted to do something to honor his memory. They decided that giving back was the best way to do that, so they established a scholarship in his name. In lieu of flowers, they requested that donations at his funeral be sent to the Frank Quartermaine Memorial Student Athlete Scholarship, which they set up through the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation. “It’s what our Dad wanted. He loved Gull Lake sports and loved watching his grandsons participate in athletics. He understood the importance of the balance between academics and athletics and encouraged them to do their best in both areas,” said Chris Quartermaine. Administered by the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation, the scholarship provides $1,000 to a Gull Lake High School Senior, who meets specified academic, sports and character requirements. “When we decided to set up this scholarship, The Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation was the first organization we considered,” said Kelly Quartermaine. The Foundation has been administering scholarships for over 25 years. This year alone, it awarded 31 scholarships to Gull Lake students. “It was a very easy process to set up the scholarship, and the way the Foundation helped us through the selection process made it very smooth,” commented Chris Quartermaine. This is the third year the Frank Quartermaine scholarship will be awarded. “It has been such an honor to be a part of providing this scholarship to these deserving student athletes—it really fits what my Dad was all about and what he represented,” stated Kelly Quartermaine. ![]() When creative writer Katie Elms needed a challenge, her teacher, Ashley Copp, suggested she investigate and enter a writing contest. Katie then submitted a short story to the prestigious Alliance for Young Writers and Artists. The result? Not only did Katie win a gold medal at the regional level, but she also won a Gold Key at the 2012 national level. Katie was invited to Carnegie Hall in New York City for the awards ceremony, which featured Meryl Streep as the key note speaker. Mrs. Copp submitted a grant request to GLCSF that enabled Katie to attend the ceremony. “It was so important for her to see artistic expression celebrated at that level,” said Jody Elms, Katie’s mother. “Being able to go to New York opened up a whole new world beyond Hickory Corners and really broadened her artistic vision.” The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers identifies teenagers with exceptional creative talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Other notable artists and writers who received the Award include: Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, John Lithgow, Andy Warhol, Ken Burns, John Baldessari, Truman Capote, and Sylvia Plath.
